It’s time to get serious about style. No, we’re not talking about dapper suits and polished shoes (though in some cases, those help!) We’re talking about the UPI Stylebook – the guide that explains how to write numbers, the difference between further and farther and much, much more.
Sound boring? In fact, it’s not – not at all. Learning style helps build credibility (you want that, don’t you?) For example, did you know that a knowledgeable meteorologist or even an amateur weather geek could write you off if you call a mild snowstorm a blizzard? You could wind up getting sued for libel if you call a thief a burglar. And those people who sell houses? They’re not all Realtors.
Need more convincing? Check out style guru Bruce Cook’s explanation of why it’s important. And if you’re already sold, try your hand at a style quiz. Download a quiz below, fill it out (don’t forget to reference our online stylebook) and email your answers to UPIU Mentor Sara Jackson at sjackson@upi.com. She’ll check your work and let you know how you did. (The first 10 quizzes are available now – check back soon to see the full series.)
Good luck!
